So, I’m going to start this off with a huge disclaimer:  I am not an expert on either feminism or anime … or anything!

While I did have some experience studying women’s issues in my undergrad, it’s been 4 years since I graduated and in these years I’m afraid that my brain has turned to mush.  Writing about and analyzing the media I consume is an effort to reclaim my gray matter from the forces of the brain slug known as real life.

My undergrad degree is in English (aka useless), but my writing skills have also fallen victim to the mushification of disuse.  Here’s hoping that both my critical thinking and writing skills will improve with this project!

In any given hobby or niche, there are those who are very passionate about the subject and passionate about sharing it with others.  Personally, I’m one of those people who exists within this subculture, but I love to critique it, study it, analyze it. It’s just who I am, and I believe that thinking critically about the things you love can lead to very interesting discoveries. We should all think critically about the subjects we love, and the media we consume, lest we become sheep!

Since my academic background in feminism is pretty weak (and you know, I’m a human being), I’m sure I’ll make mistakes and struggle to find my way.  My biases are certainly there, but I’m hoping that I’ll be able to use my experiences in the most positive way possible.

That brings me to another huge disclaimer:  I am an American and thus view both anime and feminism through a red white and blue lens.

My viewpoint will be as an American looking at the imported product of another culture – this is a huge challenge but also a great opportunity to explore how media is viewed (and enjoyed!) by two very different cultures.

So that’s a brief description of who I am as related to this blogging project!

Some other random facts about me:

• I’m 26 years old.
• I have two cats that are diametrically opposed to one another in looks, personality and behavior.
• I live in Southern Arizona.
• I end up loving characters in anime who die. If I love a character, truly love a character, he or she will die by the end of the series. Guaranteed.
